Things I'm loving (a "just for fun" edition)

I’ve been quiet here for a few weeks, so I thought it’d be nice to pop back in with a few things I enjoy right now.

No traditional writing lesson today…this one’s just for fun!

Things I’m Loving Right Now

My media consumption has increased dramatically over the last year. In my downtime, I’m constantly reading, listening to an audiobook or podcast, or watching a new show—so much so that I’ve had to institute a daily “no headphones walk” where I pause information input for my brain and listen to some nature sounds for a bit.

That said, we’re in a golden age of content. No affiliate links; these are just things I’d sincerely recommend!

1. Podcast episode: Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard feat. Psychiatrist Blaise Aguirre

I thought this was a fascinating exploration of self-hatred and how, when we are emotionally dysregulated, we can’t think properly. It also got into why being too protective of one’s feelings can rob us of the ability to confront necessary emotions. A great reminder for all of us complicated human beings…the more you understand about your own mind, the better you can take care of it!

2. Book: Chelsea Handler’s “I’ll Have What She’s Having”

I’ve been a long-time fan of Handler’s books, but this new one from her shows extreme personal growth and is a more mature, toned-down version of her usual snarky, over-the-top stand-up style of writing I’ve come to expect from her. I recommend this to any female friend who will listen, and I will probably be re-reading it once a year. It’s about coming into yourself, believing in your personal value (esp. as a woman!), speaking up when you need to, and being your most honest, optimistic, and generous self. 10/10; no notes.

3. Song: “Cowboy Gangster Politician” by Goldie Boutilier

If you are still sleeping on Goldie Boutilier, you won’t be after listening to this song. She’s got a fascinating backstory: post-modeling career, in her late 30s, she moved back in with her parents to save up for a foray into music; a bold move that I like a lot. Her music is a fascinating blend of country-western and pop with an ethereal vibe that I can’t seem to get enough of. She’s an odd character on social media, but I think she’s going to blow up based on her songwriting and unique positioning.

4. Show: “Adults” on Hulu

A great cast of newbies that feels like modern Friends! I loved this new show’s sarcastic, quick-moving comedy and the chemistry between characters so much that I’ve already watched all eight episodes twice (and am dying for season 2!) I also appreciated seeing the cast diversity and representation that has been missing from an ensemble sitcom for too long.

5. YouTube video: “The Google Interview Question Everyone Gets Wrong” by Veritasium

I’ve been subscribed to this YouTube channel for a few years now, and it’s hands-down one of the best-produced, most interesting channels I’ve found that makes complex scientific topics accessible, visually interesting, and fun to watch. This particular topic was fun because it’s so commonly referenced, and I appreciated how much detail it got into without being overwhelming.

6. Newsletter: Sherry Ning’s Substack

Ning is a young writer and thinker whose writing I’ve really come to enjoy (and admire!) over the last couple of years. Her thoughtful, rich writing voice comes through in every new edition she sends. One titled “Stop Looking at Each Other” examines our modern relationship with social media and the world-building we do there, and takes a fascinating look at the voyeurism that comes with it.

In other news: I’m currently exploring the idea of selling off all of my writing resources that currently live in The Writing Lab. I’d like to find a new home for them, ideally somewhere they can help other freelance writers.

If you or someone you know may be interested in purchasing the lot, reply to this email! I’ve decided I’d like to shut down this part of my business, as I don’t enjoy the selling aspect of digital products, and I know there are other folks out there who do.

Hope you're enjoying your summer so far!

'Til next time,

Kaleigh Moore
